It’s pretty common to be nervous about test day. And, you’re certainly not alone if you hate taking tests.

The best thing you can do is start preparing early, because the better prepared you are, the fewer things you’ll have to worry about when it’s time to actually take the test. The first step involves preparing yourself mentally and physically for your standardized test.

Plan and Organize

Most people worry about tests because they’re concerned they won’t be ready. Reviewing material and studying is necessary for even standardized tests. Reviewing the basics of the subjects that will be on the test is recommended.

There are certain things you’ll need to know about the test. If your teacher doesn’t let you know during class, ask about the subjects the test will cover, whether the test will include essay questions or be restricted to multiple choice questions, and how much time you’ll be given to finish the test.

Once you know these basics, you can organize your time to help yourself review important material efficiently. Don’t try to cram everything into your head the night before the test. Break up the material into smaller, more manageable sections, and study a section every evening. Your mind will retain the information better, and you’ll be more relaxed on test day.

In addition to your time, organize your study area. Some people like studying in quiet, while others prefer background noise. Plan where and when you’ll study, and stick with that plan.

Verify the test’s time and location. Put everything you’ll need, including pencils and a calculator, into your backpack before the day of the test. That way you won’t be rushing around the morning of the test looking for those items, and you’ll know exactly where to go for the test.

The night before the test isn’t the right time to hang out with your buddies. Instead, spend some time relaxing and start preparing yourself mentally for the test. That evening, stop thinking about the test. Instead, read a good book or watch an entertaining movie on TV. Eat a dinner that’s high in protein, because that will help you have more energy and be more alert. And finally, get a good night’s sleep.

On Test Day

Once the day of the test arrives, get up early and enjoy a good breakfast. The breakfast you eat is important, because you won’t have as much energy if you eat the wrong type of foods. Emphasize proteins, like eggs, cheese (including cottage cheese) and peanut butter.

Avoid eating too many carbohydrates, and stay away from foods with a lot of sugar. In addition to drinking plenty of water after you wake up, bring some bottles of water with you to the test so you can drink some during breaks or even during the test itself.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and make sure your shoes are comfortable, because if your feet hurt your entire body will hurt. Arrive at the test’s location early, and visualize opening the test booklet and knowing all the answers for a few minutes. Take some deep breaths and shake out your whole body to relax any tense muscles.

If you’re properly prepared and well-rested, and you know the test material, you’ll do just fine on the test. Stay confident and loose, and do the best job you can.

I was waitlisted for Harvard and Georgetown, and I’m seeking any good ideas to get off this list and into one of these colleges. Thanks!

Unfortunately, college wait lists are tricky things.
Most colleges admit more students than their target class size, because they know that a certain percentage of students will turn them down. Obviously this percentage is lower for schools like Harvard and Georgetown than for smaller, less well-known schools. Some schools hardly ever admit people off their wait lists, if they get a higher than expected acceptance rate.

The only thing you can really do is to make sure the school knows you are still highly interested in coming to the school. Send a note to the admissions officer for your region and the wait-list contact person and express your interest in their school and let them know that you will most likely attend their school if admitted off the wait list. You can also have a college counselor write a note, or if you have a family connection to the school, they can write the note, but make sure not to overdo it! You don’t want them to think you’re too pushy.

A handwritten note is always best, although email is often quicker. Maybe send both? Or you can send a handwritten note Priority mail or FedEx.

In the meantime, take a closer look at the schools you were admitted to and make a decision as to your “Second First Choice,” so that if you need to put a deposit in there, you won’t get caught off guard. Also, make sure to be timely with returning your “reject” cards to the schools you know you’re definitely not going to. That way, people in your position elsewhere have greater chances of getting in (Tell your friends and classmates to do this too!! If everybody did, life would be so much easier).

Many people hold out hope of getting off the wait list until the very end of the summer, but I think you should set a deadline for yourself, and then mentally prepare yourself to go to another school.

Best of luck!

And for that same reason, college student life is … Continue reading →

There s absolutely nothing that can be compared to college student life. IIt is a time of total freedom and exploration that is considered one of the best experiences in life. And for that same reason, college student life is seen as somewhat mischievous, exciting and dangerous as well, in point of view of parents anyway!

College student life is something that should be taken extreme care of because those are the golden days for anyone s life. It is during college student life that young adults get to explore the world, make new bonds, understand things in depth and pave their career path. So any mistake done during college student life would become a scar for the future or worse, it could change your life forever.

It is important to draw the line somewhere during college student life. Obviously it is your first exposure to complete freedom outside of the home that you were brought up in. it is the first time ever you will try building your life without the constant supervision of parents. Therefore, the chances are that you may just lose your mind and do something crazy. It is fine to be light hearted and engage in crazy things young adults do during your college student life. However, knowing your limits is even more important if you want to come out of it in one piece. If you know what I mean!

College student life is a period of fun mixed with growth. It is the only experience of its kind that you will ever go through. That is why we need to be careful about what we do and how we do it because at the end of the day we will only want to carry the memories that we can cherish; not regret. Studies can be hectic during this time. But with the moral support of colleagues to help you out and to share the miseries and dreams, many obstacles can be overcome without much effort.

College student life is one of the best times in life to climb the intellectual ladder. You will find many people who are interested in the same things that you are interested in or people who will support you in one way or the other. If you ask any college student, why college student life is so exciting, they’d say that’s because college student life is a mixture of different tastes, blends and people.

As a college student you’re probable living close to the financial edge, but affordable student health insurance is something you should always try to include in your budget. Without coverage of health insurance you are putting yourself as well as your families at a great financial risk if something was to go wrong.

When Christmas and other gift giving times come around we all like to treat our children. Children are a great market for toy producers and they bring out new toys and advertise them heavily. The truth is that a good education is probably the best gift you can bestow on your children.

If you can combine pleasure and enjoyment with help in learning you may have found the perfect gift for your child. Learning to read is the essential first step on a lifetime of study and education so a child who is comfortable with books should do well in school. For anyone who is uncomfortable with reading it will be very hard for them to carry out any learning that involves reading

By the time we are leading adult lives we have forgotten about most of the toys we loved but we never forget the great childrens books that made such an impression. Purchasing your child a wii games console is one thing but giving them books that encourage them to enjoy reading will help them throughout their lives. To improve your childs chances of success showing them reading is an important part of their education will be a great help. A childs imagination can be encouraged through reading and the benefits carry on throughout your childs life

Help your child to appreciate the pleasure of reading with classic childrens books and you prepare them for a life of enjoyment from reading. You can teach your children to appreciate the pleasure of books by reading stories to them when they are small

There is no reason not to read to your children when they get older and you can also let them read to you. With the internet people are less inclined to buy books but books on the shelf encourage children to pick them up to read. A questioning mind is ready for education and childrens books open up your childs minds and their imagination.

By starting our children out enjoying reading books it helps them later when they have to read books to study for their education

Firstly lets try to understand the reasons we would want Anna and Angelo to learn at home versus going to public schools. Lets start with some of the superficial reasons, first one being you do not have to get up at 6:00 am in the morning and get them dressed for school, pack the lunches, give them all your normal instructions and wait for them to get home hoping everything went well that day at school.

You are the only one that will make the choices as to what you think your child needs to learn or do and will no longer be something that you do not have a lot of visibility to. Being able to decide the homeschool curriculum that best fits your childrens learning needs and/or the interests of the child is probably one of the best benefits of homeschooling.

The average ratio of children to students in most schools is approx one teacher to twenty students. And another benefit of homeschooling is the fact that your child will recieve a lot of one on one time. Ok, Karen needs more work in math, all you have to do is add more time to math and maybe less time in english or whatever you choose as there is not any set class times for teaching a subject like there is in most of your public schools. What this means is your child will be able to put more hours into a subject that they need more help with without being pressured. Remember that the time it takes for a child to learn a subject will depend on the every different child.

What happens next is a wonderful thing, the learning of your children now becomes kind of a total family activity where the family becomes involved in just about all steps of the learning curriculum. Another thing that you will really love about homeschooling your child is you get to take them on field trips where you will both learn and have a wonderful time, and you will be doing experiments with them, which can be very interesting, but all then this also equals you are spending much more “quality time” with you child and i believe that this also brings a family much closer.

Another one my biggest benefits of homeschooling is your children do not have to deal with any negative peer pressure that you find in most all our public schools today, and your child does not have to compete to prove the abilities that he/she has as the competition is very low when homeschooling and your childs confidence will remain high.

Planning your childs learning sessions is very key when you need to plan so that you are able to keep the child interested and moving forward, this is something that you are able to do better than any teacher in public schools possibly could because you know your child better than anyone, you might consider mixing in something that your child enjoys along with the childs difficult schooling activities. for instance you might have an hour of math with your child and then right afterwards you might go on a fieldtrip to a zoo or museum, so now the childs learning becomes much more fun.

When it comes to teaching all ages of children one of the very first thing a teacher needs to do is try to figure out the childs most comfortable learning style, as it differs from one child to the next, lets say Jane learns best by writing, and David learns best when he reads, and then still there is Tony who wants to see it action so he is a visual type learning style, everone has a style in which you learn faster.

One of the geat benefits of homeschooling that we are hearing from a lot of home school moms and dads is you now have total control of what your child is being taught when it comes to things like morals and religous beliefs, there will no longer be that confusion that most children fight with when they see the things that they are being taught at home as far as things like i mentioned earlier, but by homeschooling you child now see’s both what is beaing taught and also what is being practiced in the childs enviroment.

In the end there are many many parents today that are very unhappy with our public schools are being run. When it come to public schools most people are on one of two sides, some believe that the child is not getting enough of an education, and the other side which is those that believe the child is getting overworked in scool.
One other concern that parents have when it comes to what is being taught in public schools is ethics & discipline. I believe that homeschooling in the enviroment that we all live in today is the very best way to educate your child and prepare them for life, but this task that you are taking on requires comittment by both you and your child, but most importantl you must understand the actual time that you are going to have to put into your childs eduction homeschooling them, because it takes a lot of time, if you do not have the time that it requires to benefit your childs homescooling education, you should not attempt to as this only fails.

After High School I started working for my family’s insurance business full time and attended College in between. I did this for about 5 years before it became too much, and my school work was suffering. I never finished and received a degree. How do I list this on my resume?

Have a category that says Education:
Write it like this:

Some college. Classes if relevant to job. Grades only if excellent.

List college name and dates attended (1) if longer than one year and (2) the college has a good or better reputation in area.

(Harvard and Penn State look good on a resume, even if you only did a year or two. Bob’s 2-Year Diploma Factory doesn’t impress anyone even if you finished)

How to Write Notes to Succeed
By Shirley Kent

Given the volume of information which gets thrown at you in your student years, it’s a good idea to develop an effective technique for taking notes and reducing large chinks of material to their bare essentials. A good note-taking style will differ according to individual needs – what subject do you study? how do you learn best? what is your personal order of priorities? In general, though, it’s a good idea to set out to make your notes as comprehensive as possible. Develop some form of shorthand – a few key abbreviations and monikers which you use consistently will help shorten the time it takes to make notes – a valuable factor when it comes to summarising lectures in particular where the aim is to avoid being left behind. If you prefer to take notes by hand, make sure they’re legible, and think about typing them up at a later stage. Though time-consuming, taking notes from your own notes – i.e. boiling information down even further and distinguishing between more and less important points – can be a productive exercise, especially if it helps to identify themes which occur repeatedly across subjects – a particular phrase, critic or formula with different resonances in different contexts.

Although everyone develops their own style of note-taking while at university there are a few features common to most. The ability to subdivide your notes into manageable units by use of sub-headings, bullet-points, diagrams, colour coding and so forth is worth developing. Here, the personal computer is your best friend: software enables you to embolden, italicize, underlines, draw links between and highlight key information. On the other hand, there is something to be said for keeping up the practice of writing by hand – for one thing, many people find it easier to refer to paper notes while on the move between lectures or even during periods of sustained revision. For another, if you will ultimately have to complete some exams by hand it’s a good idea not to get out of the habit of writing legibly and rapidly. Conventional ‘pen and paper’ note taking has the added advantage of enabling you to create more expressive diagrams – spider diagrams, for instance, or relevant illustrations. Throughout the process, however, the important thing is to be consistent – if the colour blue means something in one set of notes but means the opposite in another set then straight away the notes lose their ‘easy-reference’ nature. Other things to remember include…

•	Notes should be as succinct as possible: pepper them with page-references to textbooks for a more detailed explanation. Though self-sustaining, they are most useful when acting as a key to the rest of your revision.

•	They should also be accurate. Take the time in assembling or writing up notes to double-check the facts which they contain. If you have confidence in your notes when you write them you’ll have confidence when you come to revise from them.

•	Try to avoid a note-taking style which makes sense when you read back your notes the following day, but is confusing a year or two on. Your notes are an investment of knowledge, and it won’t help if they contain oblique references to information and ideas which may make sense at the time, but are swiftly forgotten.

•	It’s worth sacrificing a lot stylistically in order to make your notes clear and well organised. Note taking is unlike essay writing or problem solving in that the challenge is not to express yourself to another but to record others (lecturers, reference books, articles) expressing themselves to you. If your note-taking style works for you, it matters very little whether it makes sense to anyone else.

It’s well worth trying out a number of approaches in your first weeks and months at university. Many places have lecturers falling over themselves and each other to provide you with their version of the gospel on note taking. While their advice may be useful, its ultimately up to you to develop a style which you feel comfortable with, and which stands up to the pressures of later years and the needs of exam revision.

Once that’s done, everything else should fall into place.
